Horse sweat

Dear PONY,

I have some questions and I want to know the answers.

Why does white foam appear on a horse’s sides and shoulders? Is the foam good for the horse? Do you have to clean it off or give your horse something to get rid of it?

Sincerely,

Allie

Dear Allie,

White foam on a horse’s body is a sign of excessive sweating. Horses sweat due to high temperatures and humidity, especially when combined with very hard work. During exercise or travel, horses sweat to lose heat. After hard work your horse should be cooled off and sweat marks removed. Weather permitting, you can give your horse a quick shower, a sponge bath, or brush the sweat marks off when dry.

And remember; always give your horse plenty of water to drink!

Love, Stella

    Dear Stella,
I was wondering if you should have a grooming kit for each horse that you have? Just so it does not spread infection to all of the other horses.

    Dear Stella,
If your horses are not getting along and you only have one corral or field what should you do because my horses are not getting along?
Ill put Lightning in his stall while I ride poncho but lightning will make a big deal and will kick his stall door and it always spooks poncho and I am always scared that I will be thrown from poncho.
Please give me some ideas, that is before i get hurt.

      Dear Poncho,
I had the same problem when i got my two horses and so won day while one of my horses in the paddock and she opened the stall door for my other horse so she could be with my other horse and they have been amazing friends since then.

      Form,

    Dear Poncho
Have you had lightning longer than Poncho? If so, Lightning may be jealous of your newer horse. A way to remedy this would be to spend equal time with both horses or try to have the horses do things at the same time or where they can see each other. This might reassure them that you love them both bunches:)

      Hello,

Sorry, but our horse experts aren’t able to answer questions over the internet – if you’d like to submit a letter to PONY please follow the instructions in PONY magazine.

      Thanks for writing,

    Dear Sarah,
You should really do something that can allow the horse experts to talk to pony members over the internet. It would be way easier ’cause kids are on there computers 24/7. I don’t even know if kids today know how to write letters!(I do! But emailing is way easier!)

      Hey there,

You know, this is exactly why we don’t have horse experts talk directly to kids over the internet! Writing is an extremely important skill to learn – it forces kids to figure out how to succinctly express their ideas through well-developed paragraphs (as opposed to online chatting or IMing, where we type like we talk, using slang and shorthand like, “4″ and “U”) and, of course, this helps with syntax and spelling as well. And, after all, we ARE a book club, so education (especially when it comes to reading and writing) is important to us! I know this seems like a drag now, but these are skills you’ll need and use for the rest of your life, and you’ll thank us later, I promise! :)

      Thanks for writing,
      Sarah

how do you keep a horse clean after o ride but the horse is scared of the hose?

    • Snocape321 6 August 2010 at 1:21 pm Permalink

All you do is bring the hose up to the horse that is scared of the hose. Make sure the hose isn’t turned on. And show the horse that there is nothing to be afraid of. Then you8 should be able to wash your horse without any problems.

    Dear Stella,
I just joined horseback riding lessons and I was wondering if you had any tips on how to impress my instructor when we’re riding.

we tyrained my horse to get used to cell phones ringing because sometimes we ride when we go to visit family near us but we tied eme up on cross ties and made different noises getting louder when she started to calm down so that shed get used to them

It is not bad for the horse so I guess it’s not like a real problem, but you want to make sure you wash it off with a hose because if it drys on their skin it is extremley painful to the horse and hard for you to get off. Plus if you don’t pick it out it can cause infections and bacteria on the horse and be very irritable.
