Can horses cry?

Dear Stella,

I was reading and I want to know – can horses cry? And are horses smart like humans?

From, Rebecca

Dear Rebecca,

I will try to answer your two very good questions about the nature of horses.
Horses don’t actually cry, that is, shed actual tears, but they do have many, many feelings. They can feel sad, lonely or confused – just as they can feel proud, happy and social. Horses aren’t very good at always showing us how they feel, and we’re not always very good at figuring out their moods. Do keep trying to understand the beautiful horses around you!

Are horses as smart as people?… Rebecca, I think so! Horses aren’t always smart enough to be able to communicate with us, or act logical, but they have very strong natural instincts. They know how to look out for themselves and each other. And that’s smart! Some horses pick up their lessons quicker than their barn mates – just as people learn at different paces.

Keep thinking!

Love, Stella

      Cailtin,
Horses can do this for more than one reason. One, they might not respect you. Two, they might be trying to play. If a horse does this to you, make sure to let them know it’s NOT a thing that they should keep doing! If they nip you, you can do one of two things: You can smack them on the nose as soon as they nip you. It will catch them by surprise, and if you keep doing it every time they nip, they should stop after time. Or, you can grab their top lip and if they lift their heads, keep holding onto the lip until they lower their head and hold still.

You might see water coming out of a horse’s eyes. This is not crying but more just a sign of aging. Horses are very smart and do have feelings just as people do.
