Meet Eleanor Jones!
My first pony was a stubborn little Shetland that we borrowed from the lady up the road when I was six, in return for some grazing. Of course it got the better of me and eventually she offered to give me some lessons, so every Saturday morning Bluebell and I would brave her rather forceful methods of instruction in order to try and improve our technique. My next pony, also borrowed, was a black welsh cross, named Sue and with her I progressed to pony club activities. My first gymkhana, however, ended in disaster and I remember quite distinctly crying all the way home because I never won a rosette.
As I was brought up on a farm in Westmorland, England, animals of all types have always played a big part in my life, but horses were of course my passion.
My father eventually bought me a pony that excelled at games, followed when I was twelve by a very spirited skewbald that was bad in traffic, reared when I tried to mount but proved to be an exceptionally talented show jumper. We joined the BSJA and I spent most of my teens competing with a degree of success in show jumping competitions all over the county.
When I was in my early twenties, married to Peter Jones and with two small children, Garry and Sarah, my husband and I opened a small riding centre on the family farm. I trained for my BHSAI and then BHSII qualifications and over the last twenty-five years Holmescales has developed into a busy teaching, riding and training centre. We did have one major set back when a rogue horse was brought for schooling. It deliberately threw itsself over backwards; completely crushing my spine, before cantering round to kick me in the chest with both back feet. It is only thanks to my husband and the ambulance service that I wasn’t killed, or at the very least paralysed for life and it was a whole year before I could ride properly again.
Now I show, break and school my own horses, teach on a daily basis at all levels including the general public, career students and those preparing their horses for competition. I also help my daughter who competes at county level and is now a partner in the business.
Writing has always been a passion and from being a small girl I have written about anything and everything, from poems to short stories, to my first full-length novel when I was nineteen years old and newly married. It was written with two fingers on an elderly typewriter and I am sure that it must have been pretty useless but I just loved making the story. After that I was fortunate enough to have some articles published in equestrian magazines and have completed four or five more novels, most of which have never seen the light of day.
I am indebted to the Jennifer Luithlen Agency, who encouraged me to write teenage pony mystery novels, and I find it quite gratifying that they appeal to different countries.
I also love socializing, eating out and reading but, to me, writing is my saving grace and a place to escape from the hurly-burly of a busy life. Without it my life would be empty.
