Do horses sleep standing?

Dear Stella,

Please, please help me solve my problem. See, I’m the only person in my stable who wears a safety vest and a helmet even for grooming. Everyone thinks I’m stupid. Please, Stella, and other members, give me some advice!

Lyra

Dear Lyra,

When you work around horses and ride them it is essential that you are careful and appropriately dressed. Wearing a helmet and safety vest is more than some people wear, BUT is probably a good idea if your parents or trainer think you should, even when grooming some horses. (And hey, if other girls give you a hard time you can always roll your eyes and say, “I know, but my mother/father/ trainer makes me!” or “Yes, but ol’ Dobbin here has a nasty kicking habit.”) Horses can bite or kick, especially when they’re young, cranky or fresh. Everyone should wear protective headgear when riding – English, Western or bareback. I hope you enjoy your riding and you stay safety minded – good for you!

Love, Stella
