Is a pony a small horse?
Dear Stella,
I love horse and ponies very much, but I can’t figure out if it is true that a pony is a baby horse. Some people say they are and some people say they aren’t. I’m so confused. Are ponies really baby horses?
Love, Rebecca
Dear Rebecca,
I’m happy to set the record straight for you! Ponies are ponies, and not horses. A pony’s parents are both ponies. Pony isn’t a breed, but there are a lot of different breeds of ponies. A pony is defined by its size – it is an equine 14.2 hands high (hh) or smaller.
Fact #1: One hand equals 4 inches.
Fact #2: A baby horse is called a “foal.”
So now you know! Spread the news!
Love, Stella

Dear Porshalover,

dear Porshlover,
You should listen to people think a pony is a baby horse! They just do not know a lot about horses and need your help to have them learn about horses!

Some ponies are not that small.
What Stella says is right.
Ponies are cute, and somewhat mean…But I’ve seen pony breeds that are horse sized and horse breeds that can be pony sized… Has anyone here ever seen/heard of Thumbalina, the worlds smallest horse? She has a drafwism/pygmy gene in her and she is only 4.2 hands tall so about 18 inches tall!!
Ya I have heard of her she is soooo small, there was a pony born, and he weighed 6 pounds and is 14inches tall. His name is Einstein!
There is are a couple of breeds of horses which are called horses, even though they are under 14.2 hands high. One of them is the Arabian.
Also if one parent is a pony and one is a horse, and the foal (or baby) grows up to be under 14.2 hands, then it will be classified as a horse.
Opps – I did a blunder… the statement should have been
“… if one parent is a pony and one is a horse, the foal (or baby) grows up to be under 14.2 hands, then it will be classified as a PONY.”
There is another exception to the rule and that is miniature horses (often heard referred to as “mini’s”) – and the term on them is correct, they are not ponies, but very small horses. A miniature horse will not be more than 34 inches high (per the American Miniature Horse Association). But the American Miniature Horse Registry will a mini to be up to 38 inches.
KAG – that is where the “Thumbalina” is from, a small miniature horse
hi! im thinking of getting a horse cuz i love them, but how much a month does it cost to feed them? – SarahHorseLover14
It depends if your horse is out on pasture all the time. I feed mine hay and grain in the winter, but in the summer time he is out grazing. We feed em lots of hay in the winter cause the can’t get to the grass.
some poeple don’t even beleive in ponys…..I do though. I think poeple get ponys confused with unicorns.
no!!!!!!!!!!! no near to being close to a smaall but some can be only 13 hands.
sorry didn’t understand the Thumbelina thing, what is the smallest breed of horses?
How many acers do dwarf miniture horses need?
A pony is a horse under 14.2 hh.
A baby horse is a foal.
