Question of the Month: Eye Never Lie…
Ask-the-expert questions have poured in like the spring rain, and you know what they say about April’s showers bringing May flowers … Can you take this tightly-packed little bud of a question, below, and tend to it with your skill and knowledge, saturating it with enough sunshine-y goodwill to make it burst forth into a colorful, brightly blooming answer?
May’s question of the month comes from PONY member “wonderer,” who writes:
Hi Pony! Is it true that you can tell a horse’s temper by its eyes? I am not sure. What can you tell about a horse by looking into its eyes? Thanks.

Calico, my guinea pig, died today.
I feel so depressed. :’( She deserved to live.
aww, i am so sorry
Dear Miracle,
Aw that is awful. How old was she when she died?? As Much as i know you wanted her to live longer at least she is not suffering. i Know how you feel i have lost 5 pets to far. It is just what happens to every won how has pets. So your not alone
Jessica
Thanks for the help. She was only two. The average age that guinea pigs die is five.
Dear Miracle,
Aw that is awful. I am so sorry
Jessica/ponylover
PS.I am sure you give her a wonderful two years!!!
I hope so. Cally had a pretty healthy and happy life here with us. She was very spoiled.
Dear miracle,
Yeah i am sure you love her tons and she does too!!!
Jessica/ponylover
dear miracle,
aww! at two!? man that is harsh! hey, umm could we chat with everyone else? cause no one is replying to my comments and i am trying to be nice and stuff to you and everyone else. I hope you reply.
thank u,
ilovemypony
wow Miracle!! do u know the couse of death? just wondering because its pretty young. but my 4-h calf died and i watched the whole thing the other day.
i am soo sorry. at least she is not suffring.
Miracle, How sad!! Your making me want to cry!! (sniff)
My family used to have seven cats, but some of them started to use our grandmas bed for a bathroom, one ran away, and some got sick. Now we only have two cats left. (SNIFF)
One of the cats is my moms. She only likes my mom, my grandma, and my uncle. The other one is mine.
He will let you pet him, but me and my dad are the only ones he really, really likes. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. That’s what PONY is for, right everyone? I know what it’s like to lose a pet! (sniff, SNIFF)
Thanks for letting us know.
iloveoreo
Thanks for the support, iloveoreo. She’s been my best friend ever since I got her. I just wish I could’ve said goodbye. She passed without me with her.
Dear Miracle,
Yeah i know how you feel. I reamber when My first hamster was dieing I got very little sleep because i stayed up to watch my hamster die so i could be with him and i waited until two a clock in the morning when he did pass. But all my other pets i have lost i was not with them.
Jessica/ponylover
I once had a bunny and it died from nemonia the week after we got him
I luv rosie,
aw that is awful. That does happen a lot though. It happens because of all the stress some pets feel moving to a new home so quickly alone. So sorry that happened to you
Jessica/ponylover
some horses can get grass sickniss when they move, and allthough it can be fatel, horses are strong. depending on the case, horses can pass it by shots.
Abbie horse lover,
Yeah. It happens to all animals that move to a new home.
Jessica/ponylover
dear i love rosie That is horrible! awww, you made me want to cry:-( i have a rabbit and i absoulutly LOVE him! im sure you did to. (Sniff)
dear iloveoreo,
my high school friend mcayla hade a gelding named oreo. he was black with white on his rear. he looked so much like an oreo, i could really eat him, but i would never eat my favorite kind of animal!:) And you are right, that is what PONY is for and i think we can all over power deppressing thoughts right?:):) And i do know what it is like to lose a pet:(. I have lost plenty in my time.:(. reply soon,
ilovemypony:):)
ilovemypony,
I know that you do not already know this and I have been trying to muster up the courage to tell pony. Please do not talk about horses named Oreo becouse Oreo, the one I knew and loved is gone. In horse haven. So is his buddy Bruno. They both lived long lifes. Oreo died becase it was the kindest thing to do when he went lame. He died at age 22. Bruno died of cancer, like Chica. He died at age 21. They weren’t my horses. They were my riding instructor’s. I burst out crying like a baby when my mom read the e-mails to me.
iloveoreo
iloveoreo,
so sorry :’(. I did not mean it like that, and i feel so sorry for oreo and bruno.
Oh, I’m so sorry. A pony I used to ride and adore died recently, too.
At least they lived long, happy lives. I hope you feel better about it soon.
ilovemypony,
Thank you for your understanding and please help me spread the word. Also, thank you for feeling sorry. Our ‘names’ are simmalar.
iloveoreo
HannahLovesBaron,
Thank you for letting me know about your loss. And thanks for giving me hope and helping me feel a little bit better. Please help spread the word.
iloveoreo
Both of you,
Thanks for the support and kindness.
iloveoreo
P.S. I almost put iloveyou instead of iloveoreo!!! HAHAHA!!!
ilovemypony,
aw oreo sounds really cute!!!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Jessica/ponylover,
Did you not just see the letter I wrote two days before you wrote about “Oreo being cute”??????????
iloveoreo,
no i did not were is it??
Jessica/ponylover
She died from heat stroke. It is so unfair.
She died young, and she was the best guinea pig I’ve ever had or known. I am so convinced it is my fault! I got the puppy and was on my toes, potty-training, crate-training, and playing with her. I figured, since the puppy’s training was going well, I would have time to play with Calico soon. And although I fed Calico and gave her everything she needed, I didn’t spend as much time as I did earlier. She was depressed. I put her out in the shade like I always do, and she had thirty minutes of direct sunshine when the sun moved, and had a stroke. She’s used to direct sunshine too, but I believe she wanted her last breath to be taken away. I feel so, so guilty. I shouldn’t have made her hang on for another week. I should’ve spent more quality time with her. I will never, never forget her. Sorry for the long paragraph, but it feels a lot better to talk it out. Her funeral is today.
All this horsey buzz makes me feel a whole lot better though. I can’t wait till I can see Amiracle on Thursday. She’s the best comforter in the world. Horses are so understanding.
That they are. I’m sorry that calico died from heat stroke, but Miracle will help you. Horses are therapy
Yeah.
For now, I’m just going to treasure her memories and what she brought to our family. I miss her so much though
Dear Miracle,
I bet you do. I miss all the pets i have lost too a lot.
Jessica/ponylover
yup. they are. my pony ginger sure loves to cuddle and listen about my day. It is like horses can talk and listen.
ilovemypony,
yeah i talk with my horses to and they love it and it makes they fall asleep.
Jessica/ponylover
that they are. horses will let you cry on their shoulder when you feel sad, and dry your eyes with their mane.
abbie horse lover,
I know horses are so understanding and loving.
Jessica/ponylover
Dear Miracle,
aw that is sad. How old was she?? You know all of my five pets that i lost died of canter. But lucky they all loved long. One of the pets i lot was a 21 year old cat when she died and i also had a dog who died at age 16. If there is anyway i can help you fee better let me know and do not think it is your fault that Calico died because it is not your fault. I reameber when my hamster was passing away he was very weak and he could not get any water so he was very deierated when i went to check on him and i fought is was my fault and still do. Good luck with your dogs Traning it is not easy i know i train my puppy sometimes and boy it is a lot of work!!!
Jessica/ponylover
My dogs are 3 years old and a ton of work! One of them ate a cake!! And that wasn’t the first time! He finds away to hop up on the counter and get sweets like cake or cupcakes or whatever! They’re lucky they’re cute!! They’re sometimes good though–they could be much worse!!!
Hannahlovesbaron,
I know how you feel.My new dog Soffie likes to pick up turtles in the yard and then bring them to me to show me what you found. Just like my other dog used to do before she passed away. My new dog also has a hobbie of finding shoes in people’s yards and then brings the shoe to me so now just about every day i walk down the street to see who’s shoe it is!!! I bet i will be doing that for half of the summer!!! My dogs sure keep me busy!!!
Jessica/ponylover
HaHa! That is so funny! Were any of them choclate? Cause if they were, they can make dogs sick (like colic on a horse) they can even kill em!
!!!!!!! But anyway, that is halarious!! Did you know that when dogs reach 3, thay are not puppies anymore?! But i wish they stayed pups, cause they are soooooooooooo cute!!!!!!

love,
ilovemypony
Aww thanks Jessica/ponylover, you are so supportive of me!!!
Miracle,
aw thanks that really means a lot to me!! You are very supportive of me too!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Miracle,
DO NOT EVER THINK THAT IT WAS YOUR FAULT A PET DIED! sorry but i lost my dog on my birhtday when i was 7 and my dog was not much older…i think 8 and anyways i thought it was my fault cuz i fed her way to many treats while i was at my dads and since it was my birthday i felt even guiltier. but soon you will reailize that its not your fault, i did when dad said it was because of old age and this was was 2 years after i lost her i got over the “i killed her” part, and so will you. keep your head high and remember we are all here 4 you! <3
miracle,
read the book Sandy Lane Stables: Moonlight ride by michell bates. in the book charlie thinks he killed a horse, and he is afraid to ride again. nick brooks the stable owner, went though the same thing before he started sandy lane stables. it will help a bit with losing calico.
Abbie horse lover,
I have read all those books!! i love them!!
Jessica/ponylover
jessica/ponylover,
i have read the SLS (sandy lane stables) seires too. i own the book Horse for the summer and the Runaway pony.
:’( She died?!
Oh, I’m so sorry!!! At least you have your puppy…I know it’s not the same but at least you have your puppy and Miracle to lean on. I’m sorry
I can’t believe it either. I know, Amiracle and my puppy have been very supportive. My closest friends came to the funeral and now she has a collection of sweet-smelling flowers on her grave. She’s in heaven now though!
Dear miracle,
yeah and at least she is not suffering. Have a great time with Amiracle!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Awe! I feel so bad for her. She will rest in peace.
Thanks for the help everyone. I feel bad again now. My puppy dug up Calico and moved her corpse to a different spot. Then she ate her flowers. I simply cannot believe it. All of my friends came to her funeral to bring Calico flowers, and now its no more use. I don’t know what to do with the puppy.
I’m going to move Calico back to her resting spot, and pick some wildflowers to replace upon her grave. I love you, Calico–forgive the puppy.
Dear miracle,
that is very nice of you i do that at my pet grave too for my pets!!
Jessica/ponylover
Ps. How many pets have you lost other then Calico??
Thats nice! She will feel more comfortable!
love,
ilovemypony
Oh goodness! Crazy puppy! I’m sure Calico forgives you…after all, it wasn’t your fault! I’m sorry about Calico! And puppy–LEAVE CALICO ALONE!!
Yeah.
My brother told me that dead things rot anyway, but you can probably guess I wasn’t too reassured or happy about THAT comment. Luna has gotten so much better from that incident though, it is extremely hard NOT to get mad at a wiggly ball of soft fur!!!
One of the tings he got was chocolate! We were so mad at him, but mostly scared because he’s a little dog that ate chocolate, and we know that’s poisonous. He’s OK, though. He is so bad!
I know they’re not puppies anymore, but I just call them puppies all the time, even though they’re not.
I am sooooooooooo glad he is okay
!
Yah. I agree with you. We still call a couple of our five dogs puppies or pupper or puppykins. Its funny because they respond to that.
ilovemypony,
wow you have 5 dogs!!!!!!!! Lucky you!!!!!!! You must be very with them!!!!!!
Jessica/ponylover
so sorry about
i am truly sorry i know how that feels my brother once had a guinni pig but she had cancer so she passed away but we got new ones! They arent as fun as Sneeze!:( hope you feel better
I do already.
You guys have all been so supportive! I am so glad PONY put up these blogs!
Yeah…that’s the bad thing about puppies–it’s so hard to get mad at ‘em!!
I can see how you weren’t very reassured by your brother’s comment…:/
Lol sometimes brothers can be extremely nice, and sometimes they can be annoying!
Jessicaponylover,
It is hard to get mad at puppies, they are soooooooooooooo cute!
At first i always wished i did have a brother, younger of course!
I mean like a baby brother named Frankie!
He would be as cute as a button. But i have a sister who [passed colege and is going to be 37 this year 2010!
hahaha
I still want a baby brother, but now, i think i can live without another sibiling!
Ilovepony,
Yeah Puppys are very hard to get mad at!! I know when i get mad at my puppy she gives me this little cute puppy face as if to sat ‘ what did i do?’ And then i just can not be mad at her anymore!! Her cutness eats me!!!!!!!!
Jessica/ponylover
one day my puppy shankers was home alone. the other day we had steak. when we got home, it was a MESS. steak bones and trash were all over, but it was IMPOSSIBLE to be mad cuz shank is so darn cute!
guinni pigs get CANCER??????!!!!!!!
That is horrible :0 :0 :0 :0!!
Ilovemypony,
Sadly all aniamal’s can get cancer. It is awful
Jessica/ponylover
Oh, I’m so sorry!
Dear miracle,
It is me again, ilovemypony, i feel so sorry for her.:’(
It is this heat! Aton of my chickens died.
I am so sorry for you Miracle! My uncle’s mare had a foal when he was a teenager, and i forget how old the foal was but, the mom stepped on the foal’s jaw! my uncle named him BJ it stands for Broken Jaw. It was such a sad story because he died a little while after, the poor little foal!
Oh, my, goodness……………………………….. POOR LITTLE THING! I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I FEEL SOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD FOR THAT THING :’(
That is awful!!!!! I hope the pony forgives her!!!
jessica/ponylover
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to a horse riding arena but i have never rode a horse before but if i have someone has lead me i am going to go on an hour trail ride and indoor obstackal course and i will have to jump the six bar do not get me wrong i love horses but i do not know how to ride i am just ;going there for a girl scout badge give em some tips please
for the obstical course jump get in a two- point which means that you take the weight off of the horse’s back and lean foward. this helps the horse jump. look up some pictures of two-point and study them this will help you. hope i helped
Dear Mushroom,
Hold your horses!! For some Won who has never ridden a horse they can not do jumping. So take things step by step maybe today you will just get used to ridding horses at a walk and maybe a little trotting with some won leding you and maybe your next lesson you can practice being on a lagline.
Jessica
Calico was the first pet I lost that I’ve been extremely close with. My hamster died too, but when I was very young. She was six years old–we didn’t expect my hamster to live that long!
I’ve also had some fish and a bird, but I didn’t bond with them that closely.
Miracle,
Wow six years old for a hamster is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is like a life expecty of a bunny!!! You must have taken really good care of your hamster!!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Yeah, I guess I did lol. The whole family pitched in to take care of her, so she had support from all sides.
Miracle,
Yeah you must have been very busy taking care of her!!!
Jessica/ponylover
sorry if this comes out wrong, but the expected life of a bunny , (according 2 some experts) is 12 yrs. but for a hamster, WOW.
I used to have a hamster too! I got him when he was a little teeny tiny baby! He was black and white-a panda bear hamster I think…or something like that. I dunno. But he was really cute.
I have fish. They don’t have names. They just swim around and do fish stuff lol.
I’ve never had a bird. My mom says that birds don’t like her. They’re really pretty though!
Awww that’s so cute. I was very young when we got my hamster, but I remember that she was white and she grew to be pretty big and chubby lol. Yeah, I hadn’t really named my fish either. Hmm, maybe your mom has had bad experiences with birds?
Maybe she has…or maybe it’s because of that freaky movie The Birds lol.
Yeah, my hamster became quite the chubbster too!!
Haha, maybe all hamsters are chubby. Or is that just me?
Miralce,
My hamster is quite the chubbster too!!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Nah, I think all hamsters are pretty chubby lol
Dear mushroom,
If you are new to PONY, type to me cause no one has typed to me at all i think. I am just replying to everyone else and givig advice freely. Hope you type to me. And jessica is rigt, never ever jump a horse if it is your first time riding. If you type to me, I will give you more advice. I realy hope you type to me.
Ilovemypony
mushroom,
read some books on riding. before, i too had never ridden except for hand leading and growing up on pony rides. books on riding help, but you need exsperiacncde. if you have to jump, raise it down a few notches. then take it a a trot. when trotting, find the horse’s rythum (posting trot), or rise up in the stirrups. keep your back strat, shoulder’s relaxed, knee’s slightly bent, heels down, toes out, sit deep in the saddle, legs under body, eyes up between the horse’s ears, hands low, reins slightly slack, and a straght line though ear, shoulder, hip and ankle. it sounds like a lot to remember, but on horseback it is easy.
good luck on the ride,
abbie the horse lover
Western or English?
mushroom,
English or western?
iloveoreo
For western just look at your “Fact Book of Western Riding”. For English ask Bobbie or someone else.
don’t worry! if you’ve never ridden before, they won’t make you jump anything–especially a 6 bar!! Somebody will probably lead you on the trail ride. Have fun!!
Dear hannah loves barron,
Is barron ur horse?
(confused)
ilovemypony
Yup, Baron is my wonderfully amazing horse
(er…my mom’s ‘cuz she pays for him lol)
Thank you soooooooooooooooo much for replying to me!!!!!!!!!! No one has replyed to me at all! I am sooo excited that someone nice like YOU replyed! Now i can stop crying!
WHEW! I THOUGHT HE WAS A PERSON OR SOMETHING!!! (hint, hint, hint)
Aww thank you for calling me nice!! I’m glad that you can stop crying now!
LOL! I called you nice because you deserved to be called nice! You are the 1st person that replyed to my comments.
Just keep your heels down, hands soft but closed on the reins, sit up stright, and SMILE!! It’s so much fun!!
Dear hannahlovesbaron,
I agree
Jessica/ponylover
Me tooo!!!!
For western or english?
hannahlovesbaron,
Some peolple say that keeping your heels down will help you keep yor balance? ‘:) (confuesd)
,
Can you help? Thanks
ilovemypony
ilovemypony,
Yup that is true keep your heel down in really important to do when your riding even when your riding with no sterpupps. Not only does it help was balence and your posture but it also helps you more with your horse and it also helps you be safer if you fall off!!
Hope this helps!!
Jessica/ponylover
remember posture it is just about the most important thing heels down toes up and put the ball of your foot on the stirrup where your toes aresit up strait let your hips roll with your horse and lets see arms in thats about all
hope i helped
Some girl scouts came to my barn today! They rode 2 of the lesson horses and learned a bunch of horsey facts! (They also called Baron handsome while I was cooling him down in the wash stall and gave him lots of attention, which he LOOOVED!!
) They looked like they were having fun from what I saw, so I’m sure you will too! And all of them were led around on the horses, so don’t worry! Have fun!!
awwwwh!! i love the little girl scouts!! it was nice of u to (or the barn) let them in and teach them!! ill bet your horse is really handsome HannahLovesBaron
i don’t own a horse but i still love them all the same!!
horseramazing,
I hope you get a horse very soon!!! Don’t give up hope!!!!
Jessica/ponylover
dear HannahlovesBaron, Baron sounds like a awsome horse. What color is he? is he a gelding or stallion? sorry, just wondering.
i just broke my arm
no horseback riding for 3 WEEKS!!!!! im so sad
at least i will be able to play with BILL!!!
Dear billiamrox,
Who is Bill??? If ya don’t mind me asking.
BILL i a horse at my barn that i ride but i am not his owner (yet) ps. sry i have not been o latley
:O! That sucks x100000000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get well soon! How did you break your arm?
the monkey bars
dear Billiamrox,
Ouch that sticks!!! Does monkey bars can be tricky!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Yes they can!
Aww that sucks! I like monkey bars lol. But anyway, get well soon! You can have a ton of people sign your cast! I alwasy secretly wanted that to happen, that I can just get a cast on my arm or something and have people sign it. But I don’t wanna break anything, so it would be kinda stupid to have one lol
Same here! I remember in elementary school, occasionally a few people would come back from winter break or spring break with a cast on their arm. Once I saw a lime-green cast and I wanted it so bad, but without the pain of breaking something.
Miracle,
I have a lime green cast!
breaking some thing or popping out a knee HURTS. i’ve done both, and spained most of (if not all) my fingers.
Oh NO! No horses?! I had to be apart from horses for four weeks while we were on vacation during the summer. Do everything horsey like drawing horses, writing about horses, and thinking about horses. I know the feeling of horseback riding cannot be replaced, but at least get as close to it as you can! SORRY!
thank you! i will!
Lime green cast?! Awwwesomeeee!!!!! Haha
Dear Billiamrox,
aw that is awful. Hope every thing goes well when you do ride again!!! Good luck and who is Bill???
Jessica/ponylover
PS. How did you Brake your arm???
BILL is a horse at my barn that i ride. i broke my arm because i was trying to jump to one of the monkey bars and i missed
Billiamrox,
Good luck with Bill!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Thank you!
Oh, that’s happened to me before too, but I didn’t break my arm doing it. Monkey bars are fun, but they can be evilll.
Hope your arm is doing better.
I agree
jessica/ponylover
Thanx! I get the cast off on wensday!
billamrox,
That is great to hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jessica/ponylover
one time in Kindergarton, i was trying to skip one of the monkey bars, missed and ended up flat on my back. i slighty sprained my rib from that. sorry that you broke your arm! try 2 do every thing horsey, like miracle said. try drawing horses, playing w/ your horse models, reading PONY books, (or reagular horse books) and writing about horses, unless you broke your good arm that writes. i did that with my pinkie on my right hand. get better for Bill and every one at pony!
That really kicks billiamrox,
ilovemypony
p.s. :0
i kno. But i get the cast off on wensday i hope!
woohoo!
I hope u do get that cast off
HOW HORRIBLE!! I DON’T THINK I GET TO RIDE ALL SUMMER THOUGH!!!!!1
o really? why not?
:’(
=)
Don’t sweat! Just loosen up, relax, and walk. Horses are extremely intelligent, and I’m sure they’ll put you on a well-trained horse that understands you feel a little nervous. Trail rides are VERY relaxing and you’ll feel good in no time. Wow, they are going to make you jump?! I hope not! Don’t let them put you on a jump, I really don’t think the six-bar is the best choice for your first time on a horse.
I agree! I hate it when people say that horses are stupid or that horseback riding isn’t a sport. It’s so annoying lol. That was kida random…sorry =)
Haha
Don’t worry, I totally agree with you. And I especially hate it when it comes from people who have never been on a horse before, and say it without even having the knowledge of being or riding a horse!!
Yes!! I agree! If people like that say horseback riding isn’t s sport, it’s because they’re scared of the animals, they’re scared to try it, or they fell off and couldn’t do it when they tried it lol
Exactly. I wish they’d at least just stop bad-mouthing horses! There’s no reason to do something like that. And sometimes they get mad at a horse, for bucking them off or something, but if I had a weird stranger on my back, I’d try to get them off too. Horses do their best, and it is wrong in so many ways to accuse them for something they did by instinct!!!
Hannahlovesbaron,
I so agree people also think riding is not a sport because we do not do it in Gym class.
Jessica/ponylover
The people say that horses are stupid, turn that around and then the people say that horses are stupid, they are stupid lol.
Haha I agree!
thanks repling to me again hannahlovesbaron!
Ilovemypony,
Your such a wonderful person!!! I hope you will let me talk to you!!!
Jessica/ponylover
yeah. some terrible kids at school say horses suck. it makes me sooo angry. at least some people at school like horses and ask me for horse advice!
Bobbie and/or Sarah–
I registered for the Pony site online, but my mom and dad never recieved a confirmation e-mail. Is it possible for me to sign up again with all the same information to see if it will go through? Thanks.
Hi HannahLovesBaron,
Please have your parents contact our member services at 1-800-410-4145 and they will help you to figure out what happened – maybe your parents email account has a spam filter, or maybe there was a glitch on our end. But we don’t want you accidentally signing up twice!
Thanks for writing,
Sarah
How do you register for the site? What comes from the registeration?
Click on any pink name and then at the side where it has the option to log in, you click register. At least, that’s what I did.
OK, thanks, haha. Sorry for bothering you about it, I should’ve searched it up myself.
You didn’t bother me with it lol.
Good!
Now I’m going to go bother my parents to let me sign up.
I told my mom about it. It’s being really slow when logging in, so I never log in. Maybe it’s my computer. We really could use another one! If it’s not the computer that’s being slow logging me in, then I’ll call. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to try and figure something out about the activation e-mail by logging in or something…if it lets me. Oh well, this computer has been stupid lately! lol
Miracle,
You get a giant welcome package. But it does not ship till an end of the month
ilovemypony
Dear hannahlovesbaron,

Dear Hannahlovesbaron,
Your welcome!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Today we had a mini jumping clinic at the barn! It was so cool and fun to have a more intense lesson. I ride with another girl, but this was with 3 other girls, so you get to watch more riding and learn from each other’s mistakes. I learned so much! Baron was an angel!! It was so cute this morning we came in and he was lying down in his stall to try and sleep (They have overnight turn out, and my instructor says that he comes in in the morning and sleeps in his stall lying flat out after breakfast! Up late partying with your friends, Baron
) I knew he wasn’t sick, he was just tired. He looked so cute!
There’s a jumper show on Friday, and I know Baron will be ready because he loves showing off for people! I just hope he gets enough sleep lol!
Yahoo, I can say good luck to you two again! Baron, you know the rules, no partying past midnight.
Go get ‘em at the show!

ilovemypony,
Really!!!!!!!!!! How!!!!!!!
Jessica/ponylover
The answer is yes, but the ears can tell you something too. Have you ever seen a horse spook? I have and he reared, but I knew he was scared in the first place because his ears went flat against his head and you could see the whites of his eyes. I hope that answers your question
Yes, in some ways this is true by looking at a horse’s eyes. You can tell when a horse is scared when their eyes are rimmed white and really wide, whereas if he’s angry, his eye’s may show more white plus pinned ears. You can also see their health. If the horse is sick, the eyes may seem dull and sleepy-looking. If the horse is happy, then it’s eyes look bright and “alive”, almost like it’s got a twinkle in it’s eye.

Jessica/ponylover
i am soooooo excited right now!!:)i don’t own a horse or a pony BUT on the 13-18 i get to go to horse camp and ride, groom, feed, tack a horse, and all that other stuff!!!!:):)

P.S. anyone got a few tips on riding western?
I show in English, but I ride Western sometimes, so I might have a few tips for you!
1. English OR Western, always relax (but don’t slouch) and have fun! Your horse can feel how relaxed and happy you are. This is my number one rule!
2. Hold on to the horn if you feel unsure or unsafe in a Western saddle. Unlike English saddles, a horn is something that juts out in front of you in the saddle, in which you can hold on to (and tie a rope to, lol). Don’t feel embarrassed to hold it–safety comes first, always!
3. If you are going fully Western, you will probably be holding your reins with your knuckles facing up, towards the sky. I don’t know about you, but I use both hands to hold my reins in English, and one hand to hold my reins in Western! That’s just me, however.
Since it’s a camp, I’m sure they will teach you more about Western riding. It’s a whole different experience! A little while ago we got the book “The Fact Book of Western Riding” from PONY. This will help a lot as well. Good luck!
3. If you go fully Western,
Dear horsecarzygirl,
Have Fun at summer camp!! i am sure you will love it!! I went to a horse summer camp for five days a few years ago and I learned tons about horses!! So now today i have two horses and it makes it a lot easyer to know how to take care of a horse!! I hope you get a horse soon!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Ps. I do not have any tips on riding western sorry but You can read The Facts about Wresten riding book that you got from Pony or you go on websites and books to learn about western riding!!!
remember posture it is just about the most important thing heels down toes up and put the ball of your foot on the stirrup where your toes aresit up strait let your hips roll with your horse and lets see arms in thats about all hope i helped
I don’t know much about western riding, but for any riding in general, just stay relaxed, smile, have fun, and listen to your instructor! You’ll learn so much by the end of the week! Have fun!!
Yeah, sometimes it can be better to be completely un-knowledgeable at a horse camp because then you learn something, which is their goal! It’s also a lot funner too when you learn along with everybody else!
I agree!
OMG! i am going to horse camp too!! when and where are you going?
I don’t know anything about English, but in Western I do know that youhhave speed events, like… barrel racing and pole bending. Those are in The Fact Book of Western Riding. Hope I helped!
i ride western ALL the time, so i have some tips.
1. hold the reins in one hand and neck rein by laying the reins across the horse’s neck to turn.
2. leave your reins slack.
3. jogging is trotting and cantering is lopeing.
4. your stuirrps are longer.
5. you don’t post in a western saddle.
hope this helps! right now i am having a brain fart, so i can’t remember anything else. sorry, and good luck!
thanks for the tips!
Horsecrazygirl,
Your welcome I hope every thing work out at summer camp!!! When are you going???
Jessica/ponylover
thanks for the tips!!
you already said that. and your welcome!
Hi!
I love horses SO much, but I live in the city with like no stables! There is just one stables and it is an hour away from my house on the subway. And because of school, I can ride like once a month! It drives me crazy! And also, I feel terrible because the riding school I go to just provides riding lessons, not lessons on like tacking and mucking out. I want to do those things but don’t know how! I feel bad knowing how to ride but not even knowing how to tack a horse! Can someone help me please?!
Don’t feel bad!
I used to be like you. I knew how to tack up a horse and ride it, but I didn’t know anything about caring for it–bathing it, mucking out its stall, or even feeding it. So I read some PONY fact books and went to my ranch to ask if, instead of a riding lesson, I could have a lesson about caring for a horse. My instructor said yes, so that lesson we bathed me horse. I asked for it again for the next few weeks, and I managed to learn to muck, to feed, and to do all things to care for a horse. If your parents or your stables don’t let you to do that for any reason, ask if you can come at a later time to watch and learn and try it all out! Your mom could drop you off in the morning and pick you up later, if your stables gives the OK.
Also, if you have any friends, relatives, or neighbors that own horses…ask if you can help take care of their horse! I’m sure they’ll be glad to have a helping hand.
And you might have some horse camps near you during the summer that you can sign up. Horse camps almost always teach you that good stuff, and if they don’t, ask if they can teach you!
I live in a suburban area, but I’m lucky to have a ranch close to me where I ride. Good luck, I’m sorry that you don’t have a stables too close to you. At least you know how to ride.
That’s a good idea! I learned how to tack up and ride, but I had to wait until summer camp to learn how to muck out and bathe a horse (with like shampoo and stuff) Good luck solving your riding lesson dilema, I know I was fortunate enough to have my mom be riding already when I got interested in horses (which was like right away!!!
) (And I’m not trying to brag; sorry if it comes across that way)
Dear Miracle,
Thank you so much! It helps.
how do you pass by the time when you cant ride? I take lessons and its 2 per week but STILL! Please help?!
Dear Hannahcers,
I know how you feel. There are many ways to help pass the time one way is you can just think about horses, or read, or take a nap, or draw horses!! Things that work the best for me to pass time is just to do somthing in the idea of horses!!! Hope this Helps!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Just like Jessica/ponylover said, it will definitely pass the time to do anything close to horses, like drawing them or writing about them.PONY has great stuff to keep you occupied in each package! What I do is, I hang up tons of horse posters and COVER my room, every inch, with something horsey. Being busy with other things helps, too–maybe you can get a pet that will keep you company, and you might have homework (thumbs down), chores (thumbs down), or learning new things that you are interested in (thumbs up). Good luck!
And here’s sort of a personal thing, but if I get too heartsick away from horses, I jump onto my cat’s little play thing (a tall furry thing with a place to sleep and jump around, up and down) and start “riding it.” Basically, I move my body to a walk, a trot, a canter, then a hand-gallop lol, with me giving aids as if I WAS on a horse. It probably sounds sort of funny, and it is, but strangely it helps me.
Maybe you can use my technique too, on the arm of a sofa or something.
Haha that’s a creative way to deal with it!! That’s very clever
Lol thanks
It sort of just came from…instinct? I don’t know the right word, but I just jumped on my cat’s play thing and started riding it out of nowhere. That’s just horsecrazy me
I agree!!!
Jessica/ponylover
clever miracle, you have a creative imagination. Here is something to lol about: Even thou we are at the barn, i ride barrels in the arena with a saddle and bridle on it, and i have my helmet, or cowgirl hat on. LOL HaHa! `:)
i agree!!!
Jessica.ponylover
Haha! That sounds fun!
i do too! but in this case, it is my mom’s ab lounger, on of those work out balls we have a school, or my bedroom chair. some times i ride my big stuffed horse. to pass the time i also play with my models, stare holes though my horse posters, read PONY books, and draw horses. this is some thing to lol about… when i’m out side i pretend i’m the horse and the rider. i tap and squeeze my sides with my elbows, saying yah, walk on, or giddy up. some times i put on one of my cowboy hats or riding helmets and stare out my window, witch has the best view of our horse field and riding trails. then i dream about my own horse. yeah, it’s kinda weird, but it’s fun!
I definetly know how you feel! get a good book, not one about horses you want to keep your mind of them. Draw non-horse, watch a movie horse-free. If you need more advice, type to me! LOL
i can’t sit in one place at 4 we go to camp!!!!!!! im glad i got all my packing done yesterday though
(it took forever to wash and then pack everything)
Whoo!!! Have fun at horse camp!
U r sooooooooooooooooooooo lucky!:) i have never been to horse camp, but i get to spend time with ginger every day 9except for sundays which is her day-off )

Maddie Y,
I have a paint horse to and somthings she gives me the wild eye too!!!
jessica/ponylover
jessica/ponylover
my half morgan half welsh chestnut pony ginger gives me this anxious eye when something comes toward her face. We think something happend to her before my friend lauren had her. But we have to put her eye medicine in. Do you have any advice so she will get used to things coming toward her face.(we have had her for a year now. i think se would have gotten used to stuff coming toward her face. she is fine with flymasks, bridles, and halters, but not water bottles. :$:$:$:$:$:$:$:$:$ Thanks
Hmm, well, maybe you can just be sure to be extra-extra-extra-gentle when washing her face, and always talk to her and soothe her when you’re doing it. Hope this’ll help!
dear hannahlovesbaron,
ginger does not like when stuff unknown to her comes toward her. do not know why?! <:) (confused, again)
were you typing to me? cause if you were, thanks! and thanks again for repling to my blog that makes me smile
thanks again,
ilovemypony
Yeah, I was. Sorry I didn’t reply directly under your message. I must’ve clicked the wrong button
Hope this answers your question! I’m glad my reply made you smile =)
She might not like when unknown stuff comes towards her because it’s, well, unknown! She might be a little cautious of something (or someone) new and different coming towards her and is on her guard, so you just need to be gentle and cautious because you never know what she could do if she feels threatened. Just let her know that everything is OK.
ilovemypony-
that post above is to you, also. Sorry I keep clicking the wrong button!!
hannahlovesbaron,
Ha ha yeah i do that too!! So your not alone!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Dear hannahlovesbaron,
The vet came out and i figured out why sheis stiff!:) Her right molers are crooked and it hurts when i ride her on the right side. The bit hurts against her!:( it is like a to big retainer!
Thanks for all the advice though
,
ilovemypony
ilovemypony-
I’m glad the vet figured out why your horse was stiff! Baron’s left-lead canter wasn’t very nice when we got him, but now it’s getting better and easier to pick up (his right lead is so smooth and nice to sit to). I remember the dentist came out and floated his teeth and fied whatever needed to be, and when I rode him after that he was so much more responsive and easier to bend and more willing to stretch his neck down!
it is oky!
no problem. Thanks for the advice though its helping alot.
ilovemypony
thank u thank u =)
I think something happened to her b4 lauren hsd her. When i ride her on her right side she is stiff but very, very goey. Her trot was quick, not relaxed and not pretty at all. Mabye someone only worked her on her left side and not her right side. :/ (confused)
thanks again, hope you reply soon,
ilovemyponhy
ilovemypony,
I am just wondering was your horse a race horse before you got her??
Jessica/ponylover
No, it is to bad she was not. She is a pony though. We had this huge horse (not a shire) named big george, and he was a race horse. He jumped, but now he is retired. He ran in the breeders cup!!! We have had a bunch of race horses. Like lilly, diane she ran in new mexico. They must have not done well because they got sold to us. They both died. Diane got bit but that was not the least of her problems. Lilly died of old age.
Diane had a baby named maxine. She died when she was a baby. Something was wrong. She did not get up when most foals usually do
We miss all of our past horses. My first pony was named buttercup. My third pony is still alive. The vet came out today to look at her. They had to knock her out and scrape gunk out of her eye. She may have a tumor
her name is sherri. Dr. sloan said if the eye does not improve in a week, we may have to bring her in for some futher examinations.
I hope it all turns out well,
ilovemypony
ilovemypony,
aw poor you!! I hope Sherri does better!! =) How old is she?? Tell me how it al works out!!
Jessica/ponylover
Omg that sounds awful! I really hope your horse’s eye is OK and fixable if it’s not OK. I feel really bad for your misfortune. I hope it turns out for the best!
thanks hannahlovesbaron. i will try it!
i am still confuesed why she is is doing that :$ :$
thanks again,
ilovemypony
ilovemypony,
maybe your horse as a bad experce with people tuching her face. what i would do is i would take thing step by step. first lightly bursh your horses face with a soft face brush. Then when she gets use to that practice toaching her face talking to her in a soft vioce while your toaching her face. This will probley take a pretty long time but it should work!! Tell me how it works out and by the way your horse sounds really cute/wonderful!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Thank you jessica/pony/lover! I tried it out and it worked!
i am so glad i have a friend like you
!
ilovemypony,
your so welcome!! i am so happy to have a friend like you too!!!
Jessica/ponylover
awwwwww!
thanks jessica/pony/lover!
ilovemypony
ilovemypony,
your so welcome!!
Jessica/ponylover
PS. how is Ginger??
Jessica/ponylover,
are you mad at me?
billiamrox
No not at all!! Why were you thinking that??!!!
Jessica/ponylover
She is doing perfect. We have 4 horses and we mabye be getting another 1.
we are 1 in line!!!
she is so sweet, and she rides in a western saddle. She is a darker brown bay. She is 13 hands which is in between maezzea and ginger. That is the perfect size for me!
i am gonna test ride her. Me and my mom are gonna go look at her next wedsnsday. She is practiccly ours! We are thinking about calling her amiya (a-my-a), that is an indian name. hope it works out!
She is a 3 yr old and was a wild horse, i mean pony! she is now tamed. She was part of the mustang makeover, and they had 100 days to tame her. That is not alot but it payed off!!!!!!!!!
Omg have fun!! I remember when we went to check out Baron for the first time! I was so nervous but excited at the same time! I hope it all works out! Amiya is a pretty name =)
I got my pony package!
The welcome one and it only took like 4 or five days!
I thought it took 3-6 weeks! Huh… O well, i am just sooooooooooo super dee dooper excited!
ilovemypony
ilovemypony-
the plastic water bottle might scare her if it makes a weird noise she’s not used to, also. That might be why she’s a little cautious about it.
whats her name! my horses name is chloe
Her name is Ginger!
She is sweet and supportive, we just finished a ride an hour ago. That is funny, i have a friend named chloe
love
ilovemypony
Ilovemypony,
Ginger sounds like a wonderful horse!!
Jessica/ponylover
thanks Jessica/ponylover,
i am soooooo happy i have a friend! finally. i’m so greatful! thankyou

Your package will be shipped sometime around now. But do not sign up again. you will end up getting 2 packaages.
L8ter,
ilovemypony
Maddie,
It uslally takes 4 to 6 weeks for your first pony package!! I am not sure why though.
Jessica/ponylover
PS. Welcome to Pony!!!!!!
i go to a riding lesson, in romania , were i live. now i am in florida, in vacation. there i learn to stay on the horse, we stand up on the horse, we control the animal and many more! its so amazing! but all my family is scared about that! all my family members was have an acsident with the horse! but i will don’t live my dream! yes, its dangerous, but i will do it! sincerly, bianca! best regards!
WHOA!! HAVE FUN!!!
It sounds soo AMAZING!!!
And stay safe!!!
does anyone have some advice on how to convince my mom and dad to get me a horse? i have asked and asked but never got a reply!
quarterhorselover (a.k.a desperate for a horse)
quarterhorselover,
I have some advice that might work.
1. Show your parents that you are responsible enough to handle a horse. Work around the house, do twice as many chores then what u used 2 do.
2. Create a neat contract that says you will take full responsibility of the horse, and you will take care of it every day except when you are sick, and list that you will feed it , groom it, ride it, bathe it, water it, clean out its stall, and clean out its feild. And you must have the correct equitment, like, a riding helmet, riding pants, riding shoes, riding gloves, saddle, bridle, girth, wheel barrow, rake. And you must have all the feeding supply. Like hay grain (or oats) treats, and if you need special medicines for the horse ask the previous owner.
I hope this helped,
ilovemypony
ilovemypony,
I so agree!!! That is how i got my mom and dad to get me a horse/horses!!!!!!!
Jessica/ponylover
Thank you soooooooooooo much, jessica/pony/lover! That means alot to me
love,
ilovemypony
ilovemypony,
Your so welcome!! Your so kind!!
Jessica/ponylover
Ps. How do you make the yellow happy and sad faces??
i did the contract thing, and it didn’t work, but i will try the chore thing. i have most of the equipment except for the grooming kit and the hay/grain.
Hehe I know how you feel! I wrote a persuasive essay in school about this when I was in 5th grade. You need to show them that you’re responsible enough to take on something this HUGE!
You’re gonna be overwhelmed with all the work, and they probably know that, so you should let them know that maybe you could board it somewhere that has somebody helping look out for it. But you still need to show them you’re responsible. I know I would have A LOT less free time if Baron lived here!! I don’t know how Jessica/Ponylover and others do it!
Hannahlovesbaron,
I am not sure how i do it ether!!
Jessica/ponylover
