Question of the Month: Eye Never Lie…

Ask-the-expert questions have poured in like the spring rain, and you know what they say about April’s showers bringing May flowers … Can you take this tightly-packed little bud of a question, below, and tend to it with your skill and knowledge, saturating it with enough sunshine-y goodwill to make it burst forth into a colorful, brightly blooming answer?

May’s question of the month comes from PONY member “wonderer,” who writes:

Hi Pony! Is it true that you can tell a horse’s temper by its eyes? I am not sure. What can you tell about a horse by looking into its eyes? Thanks.

Miracle, How sad!! Your making me want to cry!! (sniff) :( My family used to have seven cats, but some of them started to use our grandmas bed for a bathroom, one ran away, and some got sick. Now we only have two cats left. (SNIFF) :( One of the cats is my moms. She only likes my mom, my grandma, and my uncle. The other one is mine. :D He will let you pet him, but me and my dad are the only ones he really, really likes. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. That’s what PONY is for, right everyone? I know what it’s like to lose a pet! (sniff, SNIFF) :( Thanks for letting us know. :D

          ilovemypony,
I know that you do not already know this and I have been trying to muster up the courage to tell pony. Please do not talk about horses named Oreo becouse Oreo, the one I knew and loved is gone. In horse haven. So is his buddy Bruno. They both lived long lifes. Oreo died becase it was the kindest thing to do when he went lame. He died at age 22. Bruno died of cancer, like Chica. He died at age 21. They weren’t my horses. They were my riding instructor’s. I burst out crying like a baby when my mom read the e-mails to me.

She died from heat stroke. It is so unfair. :( She died young, and she was the best guinea pig I’ve ever had or known. I am so convinced it is my fault! I got the puppy and was on my toes, potty-training, crate-training, and playing with her. I figured, since the puppy’s training was going well, I would have time to play with Calico soon. And although I fed Calico and gave her everything she needed, I didn’t spend as much time as I did earlier. She was depressed. I put her out in the shade like I always do, and she had thirty minutes of direct sunshine when the sun moved, and had a stroke. She’s used to direct sunshine too, but I believe she wanted her last breath to be taken away. I feel so, so guilty. I shouldn’t have made her hang on for another week. I should’ve spent more quality time with her. I will never, never forget her. Sorry for the long paragraph, but it feels a lot better to talk it out. Her funeral is today.

One of the pets i lot was a 21 year old cat when she died and i also had a dog who died at age 16. If there is anyway i can help you fee better let me know and do not think it is your fault that Calico died because it is not your fault. I reameber when my hamster was passing away he was very weak and he could not get any water so he was very deierated when i went to check on him and i fought is was my fault and still do. Good luck with your dogs Traning it is not easy i know i train my puppy sometimes and boy it is a lot of work!!!

I know how you feel.My new dog Soffie likes to pick up turtles in the yard and then bring them to me to show me what you found. Just like my other dog used to do before she passed away. My new dog also has a hobbie of finding shoes in people’s yards and then brings the shoe to me so now just about every day i walk down the street to see who’s shoe it is!!! I bet i will be doing that for half of the summer!!! My dogs sure keep me busy!!!

DO NOT EVER THINK THAT IT WAS YOUR FAULT A PET DIED! sorry but i lost my dog on my birhtday when i was 7 and my dog was not much older…i think 8 and anyways i thought it was my fault cuz i fed her way to many treats while i was at my dads and since it was my birthday i felt even guiltier. but soon you will reailize that its not your fault, i did when dad said it was because of old age and this was was 2 years after i lost her i got over the “i killed her” part, and so will you. keep your head high and remember we are all here 4 you! <3

    • billiamrox 6 June 2010 at 7:49 am Permalink

for the obstical course jump get in a two- point which means that you take the weight off of the horse’s back and lean foward. this helps the horse jump. look up some pictures of two-point and study them this will help you. hope i helped

    • Jessica/ponylover 6 June 2010 at 10:00 am Permalink

      Dear Mushroom,
Hold your horses!! For some Won who has never ridden a horse they can not do jumping. So take things step by step maybe today you will just get used to ridding horses at a walk and maybe a little trotting with some won leding you and maybe your next lesson you can practice being on a lagline.

Calico was the first pet I lost that I’ve been extremely close with. My hamster died too, but when I was very young. She was six years old–we didn’t expect my hamster to live that long! :) I’ve also had some fish and a bird, but I didn’t bond with them that closely.

        • Jessica/ponylover 12 June 2010 at 8:01 pm Permalink

          Miracle,
Wow six years old for a hamster is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is like a life expecty of a bunny!!! You must have taken really good care of your hamster!!!!

sorry if this comes out wrong, but the expected life of a bunny , (according 2 some experts) is 12 yrs. but for a hamster, WOW. :-D

        • HannahLovesBaron 12 June 2010 at 11:19 pm Permalink

I used to have a hamster too! I got him when he was a little teeny tiny baby! He was black and white-a panda bear hamster I think…or something like that. I dunno. But he was really cute.
I have fish. They don’t have names. They just swim around and do fish stuff lol.
I’ve never had a bird. My mom says that birds don’t like her. They’re really pretty though!

          • Miracle 13 June 2010 at 7:09 pm Permalink

Awww that’s so cute. I was very young when we got my hamster, but I remember that she was white and she grew to be pretty big and chubby lol. Yeah, I hadn’t really named my fish either. Hmm, maybe your mom has had bad experiences with birds?

        • HannahLovesBaron 14 June 2010 at 11:40 am Permalink

Maybe she has…or maybe it’s because of that freaky movie The Birds lol.
Yeah, my hamster became quite the chubbster too!!

          • Miracle 14 June 2010 at 6:21 pm Permalink

        mushroom,
read some books on riding. before, i too had never ridden except for hand leading and growing up on pony rides. books on riding help, but you need exsperiacncde. if you have to jump, raise it down a few notches. then take it a a trot. when trotting, find the horse’s rythum (posting trot), or rise up in the stirrups. keep your back strat, shoulder’s relaxed, knee’s slightly bent, heels down, toes out, sit deep in the saddle, legs under body, eyes up between the horse’s ears, hands low, reins slightly slack, and a straght line though ear, shoulder, hip and ankle. it sounds like a lot to remember, but on horseback it is easy.
        good luck on the ride,

          Hope this helps!!

I alwasy secretly wanted that to happen, that I can just get a cast on my arm or something and have people sign it. But I don’t wanna break anything, so it would be kinda stupid to have one lol

Same here! I remember in elementary school, occasionally a few people would come back from winter break or spring break with a cast on their arm. Once I saw a lime-green cast and I wanted it so bad, but without the pain of breaking something. ;)

Don’t sweat! Just loosen up, relax, and walk. Horses are extremely intelligent, and I’m sure they’ll put you on a well-trained horse that understands you feel a little nervous. Trail rides are VERY relaxing and you’ll feel good in no time. Wow, they are going to make you jump?! I hope not! Don’t let them put you on a jump, I really don’t think the six-bar is the best choice for your first time on a horse.

    • HannahLovesBaron 12 June 2010 at 11:24 pm Permalink

I agree! I hate it when people say that horses are stupid or that horseback riding isn’t a sport. It’s so annoying lol. That was kida random…sorry =)

Haha :) Don’t worry, I totally agree with you. And I especially hate it when it comes from people who have never been on a horse before, and say it without even having the knowledge of being or riding a horse!!

        • HannahLovesBaron 14 June 2010 at 11:38 am Permalink

Yes!! I agree! If people like that say horseback riding isn’t s sport, it’s because they’re scared of the animals, they’re scared to try it, or they fell off and couldn’t do it when they tried it lol :)

          • Miracle 14 June 2010 at 6:24 pm Permalink

Exactly. I wish they’d at least just stop bad-mouthing horses! There’s no reason to do something like that. And sometimes they get mad at a horse, for bucking them off or something, but if I had a weird stranger on my back, I’d try to get them off too. Horses do their best, and it is wrong in so many ways to accuse them for something they did by instinct!!!

      Hi HannahLovesBaron,

Please have your parents contact our member services at 1-800-410-4145 and they will help you to figure out what happened – maybe your parents email account has a spam filter, or maybe there was a glitch on our end. But we don’t want you accidentally signing up twice! :)

Today we had a mini jumping clinic at the barn! It was so cool and fun to have a more intense lesson. I ride with another girl, but this was with 3 other girls, so you get to watch more riding and learn from each other’s mistakes. I learned so much! Baron was an angel!! It was so cute this morning we came in and he was lying down in his stall to try and sleep (They have overnight turn out, and my instructor says that he comes in in the morning and sleeps in his stall lying flat out after breakfast! Up late partying with your friends, Baron ;) ) I knew he wasn’t sick, he was just tired. He looked so cute!

  10. TT101 7 June 2010 at 9:38 pm Permalink

The answer is yes, but the ears can tell you something too. Have you ever seen a horse spook? I have and he reared, but I knew he was scared in the first place because his ears went flat against his head and you could see the whites of his eyes. I hope that answers your question

  11. Quicksilver 8 June 2010 at 12:43 am Permalink

Yes, in some ways this is true by looking at a horse’s eyes. You can tell when a horse is scared when their eyes are rimmed white and really wide, whereas if he’s angry, his eye’s may show more white plus pinned ears. You can also see their health. If the horse is sick, the eyes may seem dull and sleepy-looking. If the horse is happy, then it’s eyes look bright and “alive”, almost like it’s got a twinkle in it’s eye. :)

P.S. anyone got a few tips on riding western?

    • Miracle 9 June 2010 at 7:47 pm Permalink

I show in English, but I ride Western sometimes, so I might have a few tips for you!

      1. English OR Western, always relax (but don’t slouch) and have fun! Your horse can feel how relaxed and happy you are. This is my number one rule!

      2. Hold on to the horn if you feel unsure or unsafe in a Western saddle. Unlike English saddles, a horn is something that juts out in front of you in the saddle, in which you can hold on to (and tie a rope to, lol). Don’t feel embarrassed to hold it–safety comes first, always!

      3. If you are going fully Western, you will probably be holding your reins with your knuckles facing up, towards the sky. I don’t know about you, but I use both hands to hold my reins in English, and one hand to hold my reins in Western! That’s just me, however.

Since it’s a camp, I’m sure they will teach you more about Western riding. It’s a whole different experience! A little while ago we got the book “The Fact Book of Western Riding” from PONY. This will help a lot as well. Good luck!

      3. If you go fully Western,

      Dear horsecarzygirl,
Have Fun at summer camp!! i am sure you will love it!! I went to a horse summer camp for five days a few years ago and I learned tons about horses!! So now today i have two horses and it makes it a lot easyer to know how to take care of a horse!! I hope you get a horse soon!!!

      Jessica/ponylover

Ps. I do not have any tips on riding western sorry but You can read The Facts about Wresten riding book that you got from Pony or you go on websites and books to learn about western riding!!!

remember posture it is just about the most important thing heels down toes up and put the ball of your foot on the stirrup where your toes aresit up strait let your hips roll with your horse and lets see arms in thats about all hope i helped

    • HannahLovesBaron 12 June 2010 at 11:06 pm Permalink

I don’t know much about western riding, but for any riding in general, just stay relaxed, smile, have fun, and listen to your instructor! You’ll learn so much by the end of the week! Have fun!!

      • Miracle 14 June 2010 at 6:27 pm Permalink

Yeah, sometimes it can be better to be completely un-knowledgeable at a horse camp because then you learn something, which is their goal! It’s also a lot funner too when you learn along with everybody else! :)

    • iloveoreo 20 June 2010 at 4:59 pm Permalink

I don’t know anything about English, but in Western I do know that youhhave speed events, like… barrel racing and pole bending. Those are in The Fact Book of Western Riding. Hope I helped!

    • Abbie the Horse Lover 3 July 2010 at 10:18 pm Permalink

i ride western ALL the time, so i have some tips.

      1. hold the reins in one hand and neck rein by laying the reins across the horse’s neck to turn.

      2. leave your reins slack.

      3. jogging is trotting and cantering is lopeing.

      4. your stuirrps are longer.

      5. you don’t post in a western saddle.

hope this helps! right now i am having a brain fart, so i can’t remember anything else. sorry, and good luck!

  16. Horse Lover! 12 June 2010 at 7:31 am Permalink

    Hi!
I love horses SO much, but I live in the city with like no stables! There is just one stables and it is an hour away from my house on the subway. And because of school, I can ride like once a month! It drives me crazy! And also, I feel terrible because the riding school I go to just provides riding lessons, not lessons on like tacking and mucking out. I want to do those things but don’t know how! I feel bad knowing how to ride but not even knowing how to tack a horse! Can someone help me please?!

    • Miracle 14 June 2010 at 12:08 am Permalink

Don’t feel bad! :) I used to be like you. I knew how to tack up a horse and ride it, but I didn’t know anything about caring for it–bathing it, mucking out its stall, or even feeding it. So I read some PONY fact books and went to my ranch to ask if, instead of a riding lesson, I could have a lesson about caring for a horse. My instructor said yes, so that lesson we bathed me horse. I asked for it again for the next few weeks, and I managed to learn to muck, to feed, and to do all things to care for a horse. If your parents or your stables don’t let you to do that for any reason, ask if you can come at a later time to watch and learn and try it all out! Your mom could drop you off in the morning and pick you up later, if your stables gives the OK. :)

Also, if you have any friends, relatives, or neighbors that own horses…ask if you can help take care of their horse! I’m sure they’ll be glad to have a helping hand. ;)

And you might have some horse camps near you during the summer that you can sign up. Horse camps almost always teach you that good stuff, and if they don’t, ask if they can teach you!

I live in a suburban area, but I’m lucky to have a ranch close to me where I ride. Good luck, I’m sorry that you don’t have a stables too close to you. At least you know how to ride. ;)

      • HannahLovesBaron 14 June 2010 at 11:33 am Permalink

That’s a good idea! I learned how to tack up and ride, but I had to wait until summer camp to learn how to muck out and bathe a horse (with like shampoo and stuff) Good luck solving your riding lesson dilema, I know I was fortunate enough to have my mom be riding already when I got interested in horses (which was like right away!!! :D ) (And I’m not trying to brag; sorry if it comes across that way)

    • Jessica/ponylover 13 June 2010 at 8:19 pm Permalink

      Dear Hannahcers,
I know how you feel. There are many ways to help pass the time one way is you can just think about horses, or read, or take a nap, or draw horses!! Things that work the best for me to pass time is just to do somthing in the idea of horses!!! Hope this Helps!!!

      Jessica/ponylover

    • Miracle 14 June 2010 at 12:15 am Permalink

Just like Jessica/ponylover said, it will definitely pass the time to do anything close to horses, like drawing them or writing about them.PONY has great stuff to keep you occupied in each package! What I do is, I hang up tons of horse posters and COVER my room, every inch, with something horsey. Being busy with other things helps, too–maybe you can get a pet that will keep you company, and you might have homework (thumbs down), chores (thumbs down), or learning new things that you are interested in (thumbs up). Good luck! :)

      • Miracle 14 June 2010 at 12:18 am Permalink

And here’s sort of a personal thing, but if I get too heartsick away from horses, I jump onto my cat’s little play thing (a tall furry thing with a place to sleep and jump around, up and down) and start “riding it.” Basically, I move my body to a walk, a trot, a canter, then a hand-gallop lol, with me giving aids as if I WAS on a horse. It probably sounds sort of funny, and it is, but strangely it helps me. ;) Maybe you can use my technique too, on the arm of a sofa or something.

        • HannahLovesBaron 14 June 2010 at 11:28 am Permalink

Haha that’s a creative way to deal with it!! That’s very clever ;)

          • Miracle 14 June 2010 at 6:29 pm Permalink

            Lol thanks :)
It sort of just came from…instinct? I don’t know the right word, but I just jumped on my cat’s play thing and started riding it out of nowhere. That’s just horsecrazy me :P

i do too! but in this case, it is my mom’s ab lounger, on of those work out balls we have a school, or my bedroom chair. some times i ride my big stuffed horse. to pass the time i also play with my models, stare holes though my horse posters, read PONY books, and draw horses. this is some thing to lol about… when i’m out side i pretend i’m the horse and the rider. i tap and squeeze my sides with my elbows, saying yah, walk on, or giddy up. some times i put on one of my cowboy hats or riding helmets and stare out my window, witch has the best view of our horse field and riding trails. then i dream about my own horse. yeah, it’s kinda weird, but it’s fun!

    • ilovemypony 17 June 2010 at 7:27 pm Permalink

I definetly know how you feel! get a good book, not one about horses you want to keep your mind of them. Draw non-horse, watch a movie horse-free. If you need more advice, type to me! LOL :)

But we have to put her eye medicine in. Do you have any advice so she will get used to things coming toward her face.(we have had her for a year now. i think se would have gotten used to stuff coming toward her face. she is fine with flymasks, bridles, and halters, but not water bottles. :$:$:$:$:$:$:$:$:$ Thanks :)

Hmm, well, maybe you can just be sure to be extra-extra-extra-gentle when washing her face, and always talk to her and soothe her when you’re doing it. Hope this’ll help!

Yeah, I was. Sorry I didn’t reply directly under your message. I must’ve clicked the wrong button :)
She might not like when unknown stuff comes towards her because it’s, well, unknown! She might be a little cautious of something (or someone) new and different coming towards her and is on her guard, so you just need to be gentle and cautious because you never know what she could do if she feels threatened. Just let her know that everything is OK. :) Hope this answers your question! I’m glad my reply made you smile =)

I’m glad the vet figured out why your horse was stiff! Baron’s left-lead canter wasn’t very nice when we got him, but now it’s getting better and easier to pick up (his right lead is so smooth and nice to sit to). I remember the dentist came out and floated his teeth and fied whatever needed to be, and when I rode him after that he was so much more responsive and easier to bend and more willing to stretch his neck down!

          • ilovemypony 23 June 2010 at 8:02 pm Permalink

No, it is to bad she was not. She is a pony though. We had this huge horse (not a shire) named big george, and he was a race horse. He jumped, but now he is retired. He ran in the breeders cup!!! We have had a bunch of race horses. Like lilly, diane she ran in new mexico. They must have not done well because they got sold to us. They both died. Diane got bit but that was not the least of her problems. Lilly died of old age. :( Diane had a baby named maxine. She died when she was a baby. Something was wrong. She did not get up when most foals usually do :(

We miss all of our past horses. My first pony was named buttercup. My third pony is still alive. The vet came out today to look at her. They had to knock her out and scrape gunk out of her eye. She may have a tumor :( :( :( her name is sherri. Dr. sloan said if the eye does not improve in a week, we may have to bring her in for some futher examinations.

        ilovemypony,
maybe your horse as a bad experce with people tuching her face. what i would do is i would take thing step by step. first lightly bursh your horses face with a soft face brush. Then when she gets use to that practice toaching her face talking to her in a soft vioce while your toaching her face. This will probley take a pretty long time but it should work!! Tell me how it works out and by the way your horse sounds really cute/wonderful!!!

She is doing perfect. We have 4 horses and we mabye be getting another 1. :) we are 1 in line!!!
She is a 3 yr old and was a wild horse, i mean pony! she is now tamed. She was part of the mustang makeover, and they had 100 days to tame her. That is not alot but it payed off!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) she is so sweet, and she rides in a western saddle. She is a darker brown bay. She is 13 hands which is in between maezzea and ginger. That is the perfect size for me! :) i am gonna test ride her. Me and my mom are gonna go look at her next wedsnsday. She is practiccly ours! We are thinking about calling her amiya (a-my-a), that is an indian name. hope it works out! ;)

the plastic water bottle might scare her if it makes a weird noise she’s not used to, also. That might be why she’s a little cautious about it.

      quarterhorselover,

I have some advice that might work.

      1. Show your parents that you are responsible enough to handle a horse. Work around the house, do twice as many chores then what u used 2 do.

      2. Create a neat contract that says you will take full responsibility of the horse, and you will take care of it every day except when you are sick, and list that you will feed it , groom it, ride it, bathe it, water it, clean out its stall, and clean out its feild. And you must have the correct equitment, like, a riding helmet, riding pants, riding shoes, riding gloves, saddle, bridle, girth, wheel barrow, rake. And you must have all the feeding supply. Like hay grain (or oats) treats, and if you need special medicines for the horse ask the previous owner.

      I hope this helped,
      ilovemypony

i did the contract thing, and it didn’t work, but i will try the chore thing. i have most of the equipment except for the grooming kit and the hay/grain.

    • HannahLovesBaron 27 June 2010 at 9:52 pm Permalink

Hehe I know how you feel! I wrote a persuasive essay in school about this when I was in 5th grade. You need to show them that you’re responsible enough to take on something this HUGE!
You’re gonna be overwhelmed with all the work, and they probably know that, so you should let them know that maybe you could board it somewhere that has somebody helping look out for it. But you still need to show them you’re responsible. I know I would have A LOT less free time if Baron lived here!! I don’t know how Jessica/Ponylover and others do it!

        Hannahlovesbaron,
I am not sure how i do it ether!!
