Question of the Month: How Many Acres?

How big is your bedroom? Now imagine the smallest possible bedroom you could live in – what would that look like? How much space do you really need to be comfortable? What about to exercise? Is the space each person needs proportional to how big or tall they are?

Why are we asking you this, you might wonder. We’re asking because this month’s question is about living space, except for a horse.  Think about these same questions, except from a horse’s perspective, as you mull over the question below, sent in from Rachael K.:

 Hello,

I’m desperate for a horse, but my dad says to have a horse you have to have at least three acres; our house only has one.  It’s just that my dad knows nothing abuot horses! Is it true that you need three acres to own a horse?

Happy Trails,

Rachael K.

Yes,it is true that you are required,by Law,to have a minimum of one acre per horse or pony, and in my opinion, this should also be the same for cattle.

Yes, but, after awhile that 1 acre is going to be ate down to nothing except dirt. I had 5 acres, & kept a rescue horse for over a year, almost 2. Hoping she was my beginners horse. After a year eating that grass, she ate it down to the dirt. Plus she wasn’t happy. She had no room to run, or horse friends. I had no where else to move her after the grass was gone, & she turned out to have a lot of issues, & wasn’t the beginners’ horse I had heard she was. I think she had just had a bad life before me. I couldn’t afford to get retrained, nor could I do anything with her. What few times I tried becoming friends, & riding her. Made me scared of them. I did do the right thing, & sold her to a good home, with lots of acres of pasture, & horse friends. I have yet to find the one horse or pony that’ll take my fear away, & bring back my love of them.

My fiancee and I just purchased 4.1 acres with a nice 3 bedroom – 2 bath home on it and we will be searching for a minimum of 2 horses and one of them needs to be no smaller then 13.2hh because I’m only 4ft. 10in. tall. My fiancee is 5ft. 6in. tall,so he can handle a horse that is,at maximum,15hh.

Hello! Well, the wise thing to do here is to LISTEN to your father. He could sound unfair, but he knows what is best for you (And even a horse) Listen to him. but you can always lease one.

    Hope it helped!

Well, I have heard an acre, and it depends on the size of the horse. I cannot have a horse because where I live it is against the law. :-(

Thanks that is nice that some one wants me to have a horse besides my mom, my dad isen’t to fond of animals and all my other sisters and brothers have other intrests than horses which I do not understand. Well one brother likes them but always changes what he likes. One month he likes football the next baseball. His new thing is farming which I am enjoying as it lasts but it has lasted longer than two months, I think he has found his true thing he also has an interest in riding, and has lots of his freinds who have horses they even let me ride their mule Sam, it rocked.

My dad LOVES dogs but he doesn’t really like horses (I can’t understand why). He dose really love Cars And I’m not really in to that ( but I do watch Top Gear) So I gess I do understand He is CarCrazy and I’m HorseCrazy. :P :) :D

Hi everyone i am new to this website, but i know lots about horses. I really want a horse and my mom says no What should I do to make her say yes? She also said I would have to pay for everything if i did get a horse and I have 3 1/2 acres so i would be able to get horse!!! It would still be alot of money its like over 2,000 dollars a year!!!!

I know the law equires 1 acre per 1 horse, but it is better to have more land for your horse to excersize. If you put your horse on 1 acre, then pay more attention to them, and get them excersize at least once a day. I mean, can you imagine never coming out of your room, and it being a small room at that. Just make sure the horse is happy and healthy, and you’ ll be fine!!

I am writing in regards to the question, “how many acres?”

I asked my mom how many horses we can have on our place, and she said we could have up to ten horses on our place. we have 5 acres. But she said that our pasture is 3 acres and we have 4 horses on it. it is enough room, but it would start to feel kinda crowded if we had ten. So she said probably an acre would do for a horse. Maybe even a half acre, But you have to excercise your horse atleast 4 days a week. :) Maybe that helps. I have been riding since I was 2 and I am 7 now.

I’am afraid your dad is right but mabay you can have riding lesson

  22. starburst 22 December 2010 at 7:38 pm Permalink

Hi, as long as you have a big enough stable for your horse so it’s not crowded he’ll be fine! Now you can’t forget about a fenced in area for your horse to run, play, and exercise…I’d say that should be aroun/about 1 acre. But a horse is expensive! Believe me…so your dad might be thinking about all the $ for a stable, fence, feed, suplize. But they’re worth it if you ask me!!! Good Luck!

No! The requirement by law is at least 1 acre. I live in an equestrian community and each horse has their personal one acre paddock at the back of their stall.
