Craft of the Month: Pretty Prize Ribbons!

A prize ribbon can really look any way you want.

These are just a few examples, but you can

come up with your own designs as well. There are

so many nice papers and ribbons that it can

be hard to decide what to use. The patterned

paper should be slightly thinner than the circles

where you write the horse’s name. Double-sided

tape is a great product, which will

speed up your work and make it look good.

Materials you’ll need:

• Thin, sturdy paper

• Ribbon

• Glue stick

• Glitter glue

• Double-sided tape

• Pencil

• Paper for pattern

Useful tools:

• Scissors

• X-Acto Knife

• Cutting mat/cutting board

• Ruler

Here’s how – the round ribbon:

1 Start by drawing different-sized circles. Use drinking glasses as a template to draw around. You’ll need three different sizes. If the paper you want to use is too thin, you can glue it to a piece of cardboard to make it sturdy.

2 Cut notches in the medium-sized circle. You can also use pinking shears.

3 Glue the small circle to the notched circle.

4 Glue these two circles to the big one.

5 Decorate the smallest circle with glitter glue and let it dry before you continue.

6 Cut strips of thinner paper, 1⁄2 inch (1 centimeter) wide and about 12 inches (30 centimeters) long.

7 Also cut strips of patterned paper, 3⁄4 inch (2 centimeters) wide and 6 3⁄4 inches (17 centimeters) long.

8 Fold the patterned strips into V shapes. Use a small piece of double-sided tape to keep them in place.

9 Put another piece of double-sided tape on the folded strip and fasten it on the back of the big circle. Put folded strips all around the circle.

10 Glue the long strips of paper on the back of the prize ribbon.

11 Cut a circle-shaped piece of paper and glue it to the back of the prize ribbon, to make that look nice as well. You can put in a paper clip, with the tip pointing upwards, before you glue the back on. It’ll make an excellent suspension device.
