Akhal-Tekes

Akhal-TekesDivine horses, equine aristocrats, fabled steeds, effulgent diamonds – these are just some of the many names given to the beautiful Akhal-Teke (pronounced ah-HALL TEHK-je). The Akhal-Teke originated in Turkmenistan, and got its name from the Turmenian tribe ‘Teke’ in the ‘Akhal’ oasis. Akhal-Tekes have served people for over three thousand years. This ancient (sometimes considered the oldest) breed of horse contains some of the most elegant and proud endurance champions in the world. Everything about them is stunning, unique, and almost unearthly.

When a sea passage from Europe to India was discovered, the importance of the continental “Silk Road” was considerably reduced. The Silk Road ran through Turkmenistan and other Asiatic countries, and so eventually these people, including the Turks, were forgotten, and since the 17th century the role of the Akhal-Teke was mistakenly assigned to the Arabian breed.

The Akhal-Teke would have probably become extinct if not for dedicated specialists like Maria Cherkesova or Vladimir Chamborant, who opposed its slaughter. With an estimated total world population of just over three thousand, the Akhal-Teke is certainly one of the rarest horse breeds. Fortunately, many countries value its use as a breeding and sports horse, especially in European Russia, Germany, and the United States.
