Camargue

CamargueNative to the flat salt marshes of southern France, the Camargue Horse is known for its hardiness. Often called the “horse of the sea,” this ancient breed is believed to have descended from prehistoric horses that lived in the area. Born dark as foals, the horses eventually turn white. The Camargue is very agile and has long been used by the French ranch hands, or “guardians,” to work the country’s black fighting bulls. Some Camargue Horses still roam wild in France’s salt water marshes where summers are scorchingly hot and winter months bring fierce, icy winds.
