Thoroughbred

Some people mistakenly refer to any purebred horse as a “thoroughbred,” but this is incorrect. The Thoroughbred is a true breed that traces back to 17th century England where it was developed from three founding stallions: the Byerly Turk, the Darley Arabian and the Godolphin Arabian. These three stallions were brought from the Mediterranean Middle East and crossed with native English racing stock. The resulting Thoroughbred could maintain its speed over extended distances, and forever changed the world of racing. The Thoroughbred is also an excellent competition horse in other equestrian sports, and its bloodlines have contributed to the creation of many breeds.
